National Weather Service Monitors Weather With Hummingbird eXceed

A Hummingbird eXceed Application Story

The United States National Weather Service (NWS), located in Silver Spring, Maryland, has implemented Hummingbird PC X server software to help monitor its Remote Forecast Centers across the country. Recently, the NWS launched a major initiative to modernize its services, including satellite, radar, and information processing advances, sophisticated communications technologies, and automated weather observing systems. This program serves as the backbone to weather warnings and forecasts, resulting in more timely and precise severe weather and flood warnings for the United States.

With X Windows weather monitoring applications running on IBM RS/6000 workstations, NWS needed to distribute the graphical information to PC desktops throughout its departments, providing Microsoft Windows PC users easy access to forecast information. Hummingbird eXceed provides NWS with the PC X Window layer, enabling PC users to access X Window applications running on host computers.

The new weather observation networks and improved technologies will allow NWS meteorologists and hydrologists to expand their ability to "read" the atmosphere. By taking advantage of state-of-the-art technology, the NWS is providing the nation with the most precise and timely severe weather and flood warnings possible; a country that has more severe local storms and flooding than any other country in the world.
